America First, Me First

OUR NATION IS SUFFERING FROM A VOLATILE COMPLEX combining trauma, narcissism and explosive rage.  How did we get there and what can we do about it?

In A Clear and Present Danger: Narcissism in the Era of Donald Trump,  a group of prominent psychoanalysts warn that the entire county is suffering from a dangerous and intractable psychological complex. They connect narcissism and its underlying rage to Americans’ loss of purpose and identity, a tendency to choose spectacle over substance,  “me-first” economics,  the loss of a traditional male archetypes. and the pervasiveness of  “extinction anxiety.”  

Given the stakes, a fight for the soul of a nation, Americans need a thoughtful, in-depth analysis of their own narcissistic ways and how these are being triggered as the Trump presidency unfolds. Critic Christopher Lasch first described the Culture of Narcissism back in 1979. Journalist Christopher Hedges noted how this complex has since eroded the fabric of society, hampering our ability to process information and relate to others. “We are a culture that has been denied, or has passively given up, the linguistic and intellectual tools to cope with complexity, to separate illusion from reality,” he wrote. “The culture of the self now dominates, and has within it the classic traits of psychopaths; superficial charm, grandiosity and self importance: a need for constant stimulation, a penchant for lying, deception and manipulation, and the inability to feel remorse or guilt…It is the misguided belief that personal style and personal advancements, mistaken for individuals, are the same as democratic equality.”
